My two favorite things in life are animals and friends. And when those two things mix, life is perfect.
For those of you that follow me, you surely know Big Joe. Well, Amy Aranda and I met when she applied to adopt Big Joe’s girlfriend, Jaede, after rescuing them from Phoenix. (If you’re wondering how beautiful Jaede is, just scroll to the bottom. Isn’t she a beauty? It’s no wonder why Big Joe loves her so much.)
Amy may not have known it at the time, but we were destined to become friends.
As the owner of Junto Spa, in Flagstaff, it was time for Amy to get some new headshots and I’m honored that she trusted me to help tell her visual story.
As I started to write this post, I began to think of all the reasons why I love headshot sessions. To be honest, this is not where I make the most of my money, but they are definitely one of – if not the favorite type of photography I do.
5 Reasons Why I Love Professional Headshot Sessions
Not every photographer loves shooting headshots, but I do for a variety of reasons.
The biggest reason is that it allows me to get to know someone. I get to hear about their dreams, their successes and challenges of their careers, and how sometimes, they are putting it all back together. When I shoot elopements and weddings, I’m busy trying to capture moments without intruding.
When I shoot headshots, on the other hand, I totally intrude. I’m busy making my client a new friend because that comfort level often translates to stunning images.
Here are the main reasons why I love professional headshot sessions. They are:
- More casual in nature
- Full of laughter
- Inspiring when someone finds their inner confidence
- Genuine which produces real smiles
Speaking of smiles, looking through past headshot sessions to find one to showcase made me smile. It was a wonderful walk down memory lane. Some of my clients were friends when we began, others became friends later on.
I think the thing that resonated with me most, though, was that almost all of the sessions started out with my client feeling uneasy. And looking at the images I can see when they began to feel comfortable and confident.
Here are a few things you need to know about getting your headshots done.
1. The best headshots are authentic to who you are and allow people to see and feel who you are as a person.
2. Your shoulder position matters – lower them as much as you can. Roll one shoulder forward or backward because asymmetrical shoulders work best.Yes, that’s a thing.
3. I mentioned it in last week’s blog, but it is so important that it warrants another reminder. You want to lengthen your neck and move your head slightly forward, similar to a ‘pecking’ motion. While not always the most natural feeling, this is the trick to looking confident and engaged.

I’m not only lucky to have this beautiful family as clients, but also as friends. This family has been entwined in my life for over 13 years. (where does the time go??). It’s been quite the journey…from having Adam as my roommate in 2003, to him and Kristen dating, getting engaged, married and the birth of their sweet munchkin Kensie, not to mention all the wonderful, crazy moments in between all the milestones. We’ve all been through a lot together and they’ve all shared some of my most joyful, precious and even sad moments of my life. They were cheerleaders to me to start my own photography business in 2007 and I’ll always be so thankful for their support and love. I always look forward to photographing them and watching Kensie grow up really has been a privilege. It was wonderful spending the afternoon with them and their parents. Love all you lots!! xoxo ~ Melissa
Beautiful Jessi started her senior year at Coconino High School today. After graduating she will b moving to Phoenix to attend school to become a Radiation therapist. We wish her the best during this last year of high school, congratulations class of 2015!
Rhoda is our beautiful client from Snowflake, Arizona. Rhoda often comes to Flagstaff to have fun, relax and visit her daughters. She loves being out in nature so we thought it would be perfect to photograph her session at the duck pond in Flagstaff. The duck pond is a beautiful spot this time of year, it is very lush and full of wild flowers. We also had dramatic monsoon storm clouds to the beautiful backdrop. Perfect for Rhoda and her colorful sundress! Rhoda you are stunning, thank you for being a fabulous client! ~Kristen
What a great family! The three daughters in the Muhich Family got together and surprised their mother with a family portrait session for her birthday. The Muhich Family is scattered all over the Phoenix area but always get together at the families vacation home in Flagstaff. We know how hard it is to coordinate large families so we were very impressed by this families fantastic attire and excitement for the shoot. Three generations are represented in this growing family. The newest addition is little baby girl Kendall, how cute is she! The older kids had so much fun playing in the leaves and posing for us. Someone told us this day that the family had not had a professional photograph taken in seven years! Melissa and I think that it is so special they were able to make this happen and get so many different family photo groupings. These images will be so great to look back on when these kids are all grown up. Such a special time! This particular afternoon in Flagstaff was perfect for the families fall color scheme. The gold and red leaves were brilliant that day. Melissa and I hope the Muhich Family will cherish these photos forever, it was so much fun hanging out with them! ~Kristen
