Sweet, sweet summertime in Flagstaff.  It’s my absolute favorite time of year. Now, I know that I say that about every season in Flagstaff, but that is because I love the season I’m in.

To celebrate my favorite time of year, I am scheduling mini-summer sessions. While I am having a hard time narrowing down the spot (because there are so many great ones to choose from), I can guarantee you the backdrop will be stunning in a way only Flagstaff can deliver.

Flagstaff Summer Mini-Photo Sessions

Each session includes:

  • One planning meeting via telephone or in person
  • 30-minute photo session in Flagstaff
  • Up to 20 proofs to choose from
  • In-person photo review session in my downtown studio OR an online gallery that will be live for one week

Three summer mini-photo session packages are available to choose from:

  • Package A: $99 + tax – One digital image or $99 Print Credit
  • Package B: $249 + tax – Five digital images or $249 print credit
  • Package C: $399 + tax – All digital images or $399 print credit

Prints start at $75 and are all mounted on matboard and printed on matte archival paper.

Mini-sessions are my most popular offering and they always sell out. Call 928-774-0220 or email me at melissa@tangledlilac.com to secure your spot today.  Please note, a $49 payment is required to book the session and will be applied to any package. Your payment is refunded if canceled 72 hours prior to your session.

3 Reasons I Love Flagstaff Summers

There are many more than three reasons why I love Flagstaff in the summer. In fact, I could probably talk about this topic all day long.

Many people look to the fall to showcase the vibrant colors of the city. But personally, I love photographing in summer. Summer represents a slowing down and a little more play. And there is no escaping that everything is alive. The gardens are growing, the grass is greener,  and the flowers are plentiful.

Here are just a few reasons I love Flagstaff summers.

1. The hiking, biking and summer cocktails on the patio.

Everything happens outside in Flagstaff during the summer. Hiking or biking in a Ponderosa pine forest surrounded by the beautiful Aspens is breathtaking. There is beauty all around and I have no trouble getting lost in a lovely daydream. I regularly take my dogs into the forest for their morning walks and the smell of pine and the warmth of the sun never fail to start my day on a positive note.

2. There is always something going on downtown.

Flagstaff’s historic downtown is something very special. During the summer there are Movies on the Square, Musical Acts and local events showcasing local talent. It’s always full of activity and laughter. While some might think it can get a bit crowded, I love to see locals and visitors hanging out downtown. I firmly believe it is summertime that keeps the city alive.

3. The smell and cool air from a summer Monsoon

Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats the smell of this wonderful mountain town following a monsoon shower. People in Flagstaff don’t shy away from the monsoon rain, they revel in it – myself included. I appreciate the need to feed the forest, the beautiful flowers and to help keep fire danger low. But there is something a bit magical about a gentle rain falling and slowing down the whole town.

I hope you’ll join me so we can pay tribute to summer together. Maybe the reasons why you love summer are different than mine, but the photos from our session together will always serve as a tribute to the season the keeps Flagstaff thriving.

Once again … here are those details.

Laura and TJ met two decades ago when TJ hired Laura for a job at a video store.  TJ said he hired her because he fell in love with her instantly…her smile, laugh, and beauty immediately stole his heart.  But, he said, it was her kindness, her strength and her boundless love for her family and others that made him love her forever.  Laura and TJ were friends for a long time before they got engaged just two months ago.  And once they realized the beautiful love that had grown between them, they didn’t want to waste any more time.

Originally, this sweet couple was going to get married on the San Francisco Peaks, but scheduling problems with their wedding party changed the plans and Laura and TJ decided to elope in Casa Grande and drove up immediately after for our photo shoot.  It was Veteran’s Day, so traffic was heavy and they didn’t arrive in Flagstaff until just before sunset.  We got some great photos downtown into the night, and the next day headed up to the peaks near Snowbowl for more.

I loved spending time with Laura and TJ and hearing about their love story.  Congrats you two!  Thank you for including me in your special day! ~ Melissa

The last time I photographed Lauryn she was two.  Yep. Two.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  Fifteen years ago, my friend Pam (Lauryn’s mom) and I worked at the Summit Center.  She had two adorable little girls and I had a new camera.   So I took about twenty rolls of film (Yes!  Film!!) to her home and photographed those two giggle boxes rolling around in piles of leaves.  I’ve never had so much fun.  Soon after, I was thinking about starting a photography business but scared out of my mind.  Pam was always the one I turned to for reason.  While she probably doesn’t know it, she talked me into purchasing my home in Flagstaff.  I was obsessing…could I afford it…what if I couldn’t find a roommate…did I really want it…was I going to stay in Flagstaff, etc.  Pretty much, I was paralyzed with indecision.  “Why not?” she said, “Don’t be scared, just do it!”  With no emotion, she just said it matter of fact.  “If you don’t like it, you can sell it.  What’s the big deal?“.   So, the next thing I knew, I had a new home.  And thirteen years later, I still live in that home.  Pam coaxed me along my photography path in the same manner she did for my real estate fears.  In 2005, I was on the fence.  Should I leave the security of a great job?  “Just go for it!“, she said.  I obsessed.  I made spreadsheets.  I made pros and cons lists.  I obsessed more.  But, in the end, I followed my heart and I have Pam to thank for that.

Pam after my home purchase, Pam and I both quit our jobs.  She went to work at the Northern Arizona University Marketing Department and I, well, I made the leap of faith to photography.  We’ve both never looked back.

This session was special to me in many ways.  I got to spend a couple of precious hours with an old friend I don’t see nearly enough, and I got to get to know her beautiful daughter once again.  Thank you for taking a chance on me Pam, so many years ago.  And congratulations Lauryn!  You’re going to do great things with your life.  Your contagious smile, your laughter, and your bright soul will lead you to much success!  xoxo ~ Melissa

I’m not only lucky to have this beautiful family as clients, but also as friends.  This family has been entwined in my life for over 13 years.  (where does the time go??).  It’s been quite the journey…from having Adam as my roommate in 2003, to him and Kristen dating, getting engaged, married and the birth of their sweet munchkin Kensie, not to mention all the wonderful, crazy moments in between all the milestones.   We’ve all been through a lot together and they’ve all shared some of my most joyful, precious and even sad moments of my life.   They were cheerleaders to me to start my own photography business in 2007 and I’ll always be so thankful for their support and love.  I always look forward to photographing them and watching Kensie grow up really has been a privilege.   It was wonderful spending the afternoon with them and their parents.  Love all you lots!!  xoxo ~ Melissa

Brittney and her family traveled from Canton, Georgia to the southwest on a business trip that also involved sightseeing and relaxing with the family.  The whirlwind trip involved a couple of days in San Francisco, some time in Scottsdale and of course, the Grand Canyon National Park.   Brittney and her family had never seen the Grand Canyon until all of us approached the rim to start her photos.  Being that I live so near, and frequent the Canyon so often, I often forget just how incredible the view really is.  As they neared the edge, I continued to talk (yes, sometimes I talk too much, lol) and I noticed no one was responding.  As I turned to look at them, I could almost hear all their hearts stop.  They were all staring into the Canyon, mesmerized.  It really is breathtaking and yet, impossible to put in words.  The Grand Canyon is just something that you need to see in person.

Brittney is graduating from Woodstock High School this coming May and I loved chatting with this beautiful and bright young lady about her future.    It’s not often that I get clients from my home state, and I adored listening to updates about my alma mater, the University of Georgia, and all the changes that  have happened in Atlanta since I left the South in 1995.  (Has it really been 21 years!?!)  This young lady has big plans for the future and I can’t wait to follow her success.

Congrats Brittney!  I hope you and your family enjoyed your visit to Arizona! ~ Melissa

Bailey will be graduating from Camp Verde High School this coming May and I was so honored to do her senior photos.  Bailey and her mom wanted to come up north for her session and take advantage of the spectacular landscape we have and the contracting urban area of downtown.  We were chasing the last bit of sunflowers here, but we found two beautiful areas with both the taller sunflowers and the shorter ones in a different location.  For the downtown photos, we choose a cool block in the up and coming ecletic Southside Flagstaff. Bailey was an absolute dream to work with and I loved spending the afternoon with her, her mom, sister and best friend.  I loved that she brought her sweet puppy, Cooper, who just turned one and her amazing Chevrolet Camero.  There was no way I could add all my favorite photos here, so check out her slideshow here!   Bailey has aspirations to become an ultrasound technologist and I have no doubt that this smart, dedicated and beautiful young lady will be very successful.  Congrats Bailey!
